The future of technology is being shaped by cross-border collaboration, and last week, London was at the very centre of it.
The 32nd Annual Conference of the European Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce (ETCC) recently wrapped up in the UK capital. Bringing together over 200 Taiwanese business leaders, British investors, tech startups, and high-level policymakers, the event sent a crystal-clear message: when Taiwan’s tech prowess meets the UK’s financial and research excellence, incredible things happen.
Under this year’s theme, “Taiwan Power, Shine in the World,” the conference highlighted a booming relationship focused on artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and resilient supply chains.
London: The Strategic Gateway to Europe
Opened by Evelyn Lee, Chairlady of the ETCC, the conference welcomed a stellar lineup of dignitaries. High-profile attendees included Kuo-Yu Han (President of Taiwan's Legislative Yuan), Vincent Chin-Hsiang Yao (Taiwan’s Representative to the UK), and Daniel Rossell-Evans from the UK Government’s Office for Investment.
The core ambition of the event? To position London as the ultimate launching pad for pioneering Taiwanese companies looking to scale into European markets, while simultaneously opening doors for British firms looking to tap into Taiwan’s world-leading tech ecosystem.
The AI Innovation Forum: Trust, Resilience, and $74.8 Billion in Trade
A major highlight of the conference was the AI Innovation Forum, where Dr James Chih-Fang Huang, Chairman of TAITRA, delivered a captivating keynote speech.
Dr Huang emphasised how the global trade landscape is undergoing a massive shift, driven by geopolitical dynamics and rapid innovation. In this new era, Europe is actively building an industrial ecosystem centered on resilience, security, and sustainability.
And the numbers speak for themselves. Last year, bilateral trade between Taiwan and Europe reached a staggering $74.8 billion—a 9% increase year-on-year.
To keep this momentum going, Dr Huang announced that TAITRA will be hosting the Taiwan Expo in Europe this June in Warsaw, Poland. The expo will focus on trusted technology, green energy, and the reconstruction of Ukraine, proving once again that Taiwan is a critical partner for the democratic world.
Driving the Future of Tech Partnerships
Beyond the speeches, the event featured vibrant networking sessions tackling the big tech questions of today, including:
- Trusted AI & Governance
- Semiconductor Talent Exchange
- Smart Healthcare & Space Technology
- Green Energy & Sustainability
As ETCC President Evelyn Lee beautifully summarised:
"Taiwan has world-class innovation capabilities, while the UK offers exceptional strengths in finance, research, startups, and global connectivity. We believe stronger collaboration between Taiwan and the UK can create meaningful opportunities in AI, healthcare, sustainability, and future technologies."
Final Thoughts: A Partnership Built to Last
In an era where technology and supply chain security are deeply intertwined, the synergy between Taiwan and the UK feels more vital than ever. By combining Taiwan’s unmatched hardware and manufacturing capabilities with Britain’s world-renowned software, finance, and research sectors, this partnership is well-positioned to lead the global AI revolution.
